Verification of Competency (VOC)

Course Overview

What is a Verification of Competency (VOC)?
A Verification of Competency (VOC) is an assessment process designed to confirm that workers have the necessary skills and knowledge to operate equipment or fulfil the duties of their role.

Employers frequently use VOCs as part of pre-employment screening, site access requirements, and contract negotiations. In many cases, individuals must complete a VOC before being permitted on-site.

Current Australian WorkSafe regulations mandate that employers and Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) ensure workers can demonstrate their competency in performing job-related tasks, particularly when operating various plant equipment.

Conducting a VOC is an effective way to meet this obligation.

Prerequisites & Course Requirements

How to Demonstrate Competency:

Having a licence is a prerequisite for undergoing a Verification of Competency (VOC) assessment, but it does not always prove current competency.

Workers with older licences may need refresher training to align with current industry standards, regulations, and procedures.

Competency can be shown through evidence like a current Statement of Attainment or a current High Risk Work Licence for the equipment or machinery you are being assessed on.

WorkSafe Australia recommend formal, competency-based training from accredited Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).

How Is the Course Delivered?

This course is delivered through face-to-face training, on site at your preferred suitable location.

What Will You Learn?

Course Structure and Assessment

A HRTA assessor can perform VOC’s either in person at the worksite or at a designated training facility.

Candidates will be assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations, scenario-based assessments, and written or verbal questioning.

This comprehensive assessment process ensures you are fully competent in all aspects of the VOC before being awarded your qualification.

Licensing and Certification

On successful completion participants will receive a VOC (Verification of Competency) Certificate for a Licence they are undertaking.

Although VOC assessments are conducted in line with the requirements of the relevant nationally recognised unit(s) of competency, they are not considered nationally recognised training.

Course Fees

VOC’s are available for $300 (each VOC that is assessed)
